A forensic exam is a medical examination conducted by a specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The purpose of this exam is to collect evidence in a sensitive, compassionate, and thorough manner, often following an incident of sexual assault, domestic violence, or another form of violent crime. The exam is performed with the highest standards of care to ensure the individual’s privacy, comfort, and well-being throughout the process.
Forensic exams are designed to:
- Collect physical evidence: Evidence such as DNA, hair, skin cells, and other materials that can be vital for law enforcement investigations, should the individual choose to report the incident.
- Provide medical care: This includes treatment for any physical injuries or concerns, as well as testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), emergency contraception, or pregnancy testing if needed.
- Document injuries: If there are any visible injuries, the SANE nurse will document them with detailed photographs to support any future legal proceedings, with the survivor’s consent.
Importantly, the forensic exam is not about making a police report or deciding if you will pursue legal action. It is about giving you the choice to collect evidence should you decide to take that step later, while also ensuring your medical care and emotional well-being.
The forensic exam is done at no cost, and you do not need to make a report to law enforcement in order to have the exam. You may choose to wait as long as you like to decide if you want to involve the police—your choice and autonomy are respected at every step.
