Abortion Laws in Alabama
Last Updated: July 22, 2025
Mandatory Counseling and Waiting Period
Alabama requires that individuals seeking an abortion receive state-mandated counseling at least 48 hours before the procedure.
-
This counseling must be completed in person at the abortion provider's office.
-
The 48-hour waiting period begins after the counseling session is completed.
Parental Consent Requirement for Minors
If you are under 18, Alabama law requires written consent from a parent or legal guardian before you can get an abortion.
-
If parental consent is not possible, you may seek a judicial bypass from a judge.

Gestational Limits
Abortion in Alabama is almost entirely banned. A 2019 law outlawed nearly all abortions; however, as of 2022, the ban is being enforced following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
-
Exceptions are only made to prevent serious health risks to the pregnant person or if the pregnancy is life-threatening.
-
There are no exceptions for rape or incest.
Out-of-State Considerations
If you live in Alabama and need an abortion:
-
You will need to travel out of state, as abortion is currently not accessible within Alabama.
-
Be aware that some neighboring states also have strict abortion bans.
-
Use an abortion provider search tool to find services and call early to schedule an appointment.
