Bystander Intervention

Stepping in as a bystander can prevent harm and create safer spaces for everyone. The key is to intervene in a way that prioritizes safety.

The 5 D’s of Bystander Intervention:

  1. Direct: If safe to do so, address the person at risk: “Hey, do you need help?” or “Let’s get out of here.”
  2. Distract: Interrupt the situation with a distraction like spilling a drink or asking for directions.
  3. Delegate: Ask someone with authority, like security or a bartender, to step in.
  4. Document: If intervention isn’t possible, record the situation and provide support after.
  5. Delay: If immediate action isn’t possible, check on the individual afterward and offer help.

Even small actions can make a big difference in preventing harm.
