Safe Socializing

Dating and social interactions should be built on mutual respect and consent. Here’s how to stay safe while meeting new people:

In-Person Dating Safety:

  • Meet in a public place for the first few times.
  • Arrange your own transportation so you aren’t dependent on someone else.
  • Let a friend know your plans, including where you’re going and who you’re meeting.
  • Trust your instincts—if something feels off, leave the situation.

Understanding Consent:

  • Consent must be enthusiastic, informed, and ongoing—if someone is hesitant, intoxicated, or unable to say “yes” freely, it’s not consent.
  • It’s okay to change your mind at any time. A “yes” in the past doesn’t mean a “yes” now.

Recognizing Manipulative Behavior:

  • Be wary of someone who tries to guilt or pressure you into anything you’re uncomfortable with.
  • Watch for love-bombing—over-the-top affection early in a relationship can be a manipulation tactic.
  • If someone repeatedly ignores your boundaries, it’s a red flag.
