What are SANE Nurses?

SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurses - otherwise known as forensic nurses - are specialized nurses specifically trained to care for victims of sexual assault. These nurses are certified to conduct rape kits/forensic exams and often testify in court on behalf of the victim.

Why are they important?

SANE nurses are expertly trained to conduct rape kits and forensic exams. By collecting evidence from rape kits both carefully and accurately, the work of a SANE nurse can quicken the process of solving crimes. SANE nurses are key witnesses in court, and their deep understanding of forensic evidence can be a key factor in the legal process. Their expertise in working with post-trauma patients is essential in the healing journey, making the process as a whole less intimidating.
